5 Tips for Building Your Own Personal Website

Stefany Laptop

Are you planning to create your own personal website? In our 3-part workshop that we hosted last month, participants learned how to design, build and publish their own personal websites. Stefany Barker from WaaS Websites has been guiding the group through the process and the outcomes are beautiful, comprehensive, and informative websites. In this workshop review, we will share with you the 5 tips for building your own personal website from the workshop as well as some of the outcomes.

Here are 5 tips to get you started on building your own personal website:

1 – Think about your audience

Before starting to create your personal website, you should think about who you are building it for. Whether you build it for recruiters to find out about your skillset and capabilities, or for yourself as a creative task, will guide the design of your website.

2 – Make it your own

It’s your personal website, so put in a flavor of your personality. Whether that is your favorite color, a personal story, or pictures of yourself doing something you love – anything personal that will make it easier for people to get to know you.

3 – Less is more

You will want people on your site to find the information that they are looking for within a reasonable amount of time. Did you know that users spend an average of only 45 seconds on a website? Within this time, you will want to be able to communicate all the necessary information.

4 – Choose a call to action

Where does your visitor go from the website? What action do you want them to take? That’s your call to action. Is your audience a recruiter who will want a PDF version of your CV? Then make your call-to-action a “Download” button. Is it rather people getting in touch with you for collaboration or speaking opportunities? Then make your call to action a “Contact” button.

5 – Get found on Google

A big part of your website is protecting your image, so when people Google you, you want to show up at the top of the list! To do so, choose your domain name URL to be your first and last name, e.g. janedoe.com or janedoe.ch. In addition, choose page titles and descriptions that use your name and any keywords people might use to find you. For example, our teacher Stefany uses “tech team leader in Switzerland” a lot in the description.
